NEW DELHI: A female hippo, which was severely injured after a fight with its fellow inmates about a month ago, died in Delhi zoo on Saturday morning. This despite the fact that authorities had roped in specialists from other zoos including, Singapore, Hyderabad and Patna for its treatment. Last week, the zoo authorities had sought help from Singapore, Hyderabad and Patna zoos to nurse the injured animal.
"Apart from Dr Ajay from Patna, we had invited Dr Navin Kumar from Hyderabad who are known for their specialisation in wildlife care. But it is really unfortunate that even after all this, we couldn't save the ailing hippo," said Delhi zoo director D N Singh. However, Singh added that it was more like a natural death.
"The hippo was about 43 years old and had outlived the normal life span of 35 to 40 years. We have conducted a post-mortem and the report is awaited," he said. According to zoo officials, the hippo got severely injured after it was attacked by a male hippo in its enclosure a month ago. Some zoo-keepers had alleged that the authorities were well aware of the fact that this particular hippo was prone to attack, owing to its unfriendly nature. But the authorities bothered the least to take any precaution, they had said. Later, the animal had stopped eating and this worried the zoo officials. "The hippo was shifted to a special enclosure for treatment by the specialists brought in from Singapore, Hyderabad and Patna. They had cleaned the wounds and had prescribed a special diet plan for the animal. However, it breathed its last this morning," said a zoo official.
